Electronics at Eight: Music for Magnetic Resonator Piano

October 13, 2026

Invented in 2010 by composer and engineer Andrew McPherson, the MRP is an electronically augmented acoustic piano capable of eliciting new sounds acoustically from the piano strings, without speakers. Electromagnets induce vibrations in the strings independently of the hammers, creating infinite sustain, crescendos, harmonics, pitch bends and new timbres, all controlled from the piano keyboard. The instrument has been embraced by artists including Rolf Hind and Arca.

Innovative pianist and composer Xenia Pestova Bennett, a leading exponent of the MRP, presents stunning new pieces for the instrument, including world premieres by Guildhall School students and faculty members. The programme also features her own piece for Magnetic Resonator Piano, ensemble and video featuring the Bauhaus Band led by John Harle and existing pieces for the instrument by Eileen McLoughlin, Anne Marie Deacy, Ollie Hawker and Tristan Kersten.
