Musicians and Sound Artists who identify as trans or disabled are invited to participate in astudy involving a new kind of vocal feedback instrument.

What is it?

Artists will be working one-on-one with instrument designers and with one another to learn a new kind of vocal feedback instrument called Ephemerides. The study includes an introductory workshop, 5 2-hour sessions to learn to play the instrument and develop a short piece, and a final performance with the instrument.

What's unique about Ephemerides?

Ephemerides is a vocal instrument that is played by manipulating vocal resonance to change pitch, without requiring the use of vocal cords. Inspired by personal experiences with transgender voice training and contemporary synthesizer design, this technology explores an unfamiliar method of using voice to make music.

What is the commitment?

• 1 3-hour introductory workshop
• 5, 90-120 minute rehearsal sessions with the instrument
• 1 performance with the instrument (don't worry, there are no expectations in terms
of ability!)
• A post-performance interview about the experience

What's the purpose of this study?

This study aims to qualitatively understand how the relationship of musician and
instrument develops through technique, and what barriers present for marginalised people in terms of voice. We also hope to use this experience to inform the later stages of design for Ephemerides as a more mature technology.

Who are we looking for?

We're looking for musicians and sound artists who wish to experiment and (de/re)mystify
the idea of voice, whether through physical manipulations of how voice is produced or
expressed, creative composition or adaptation of vocal scores, or technical ideations
about how vocal technique informs musical practice.
