The D-Box
The D-Box is a self-contained digital musical instrument designed to invite creative misuse and performer modification. It features a simple, limited interface on the surface, but its side panel can be opened to access a breadboard, allowing circuits to be rewired. This hackable design encourages performers to explore new configurations and discover unusual sounds. Unlike conventional modular synthesisers, the D-Box’s behaviour emerges from feedback loops between hardware and software, making changes unpredictable, chaotic, and repeatable in unique ways.
The D-Box is powered by Bela, a 1GHz embedded Linux system with ultra-low-latency audio and sensor capabilities along with two Trill Bar sensors. In fact, the core Bela hardware and software were created on the D-Box project before launching on Kickstarter several years later. D-Boxes were available on the original Bela Kickstarter campaign, and though we no longer provide materials for it, the design plans and software are available online.
